Callan has started the latest geoblogosphere meme, highest points, with follow ups at the time of writing by ReBecca and Geology Happens. It is, however, somewhat US centric. So here is my UK version – old fangled counties, new fangled metres.

  1. There are some great names in there. My favorite is “Kindest Scout” … Lord Baden-Powell would be proud!

  2. Actually it is Kinder (pronounced Kin-der) Scout. I think my favourite name must be “Brown Willy” but only for the pure smut comedy value.

  3. interesting post – thanks for putting the information together. I’ll give this a mention on my site. Incidentally, I had the height of Moel Famau as 1818 feet (554 metres) – what’s the correct measurement?

BTW Would you happen to know what the highest point is on The Wirral?

    Cheers

    John

  4. [...] stumbled upon an interesting post that details the highest points across the UK on a county-by-county [...]

  5. John

The Ordnance Survey does have Moel Famau as 554m.

I used the list in wikipedia here

The height in feet they list is 1,817′ converts to 553.8m. Wikipedia is wrong (shock)!

Not sure about The Wirral – Wikipedia has it as Poll Hill in Heswall at 350′ or 107m
