Here is a quick geological conundrum. I’ve been scanning a few old photographs and came across this structure. How is it related to the underlying geology and how does it work?

  1. Looks like a set of escalating flood valves for a big earthen dam. Put some turbines in those to harvest flood energy!

  2. Nice idea, but it isn’t a dam, just a railway embankment, and that is is about as fast flowing as the river gets. And this is the upstream side.

  3. All I can think is that it somehow has something to do with the salt mine.

  5. Not mining as such but close.

  6. No. The tubes are for the river.

    Extraction of salt in this area is by brine pumping, pump water underground, it dissolves salt, pumped back to surface and evaporated for table salt.
