Rock 365 : Day 271 : Firestone Sill

20100928

Day 271 : Probably an interesting case of misidentification. I found this in the fine-grained acid igneous part of the Keele collection with the label "fragment filled felsite, Wooley". However, it looks clastic sedimentary rather than igneous. Checking the gazetteer and Geology Roam from the BGS, the only Wooley in the UK is in Northumberland and is without any igneous rocks nearby.  However, there is a unit called the Firestone Sill, which is actually a sandstone, the name of which has probably caused some confusion!
