Rock 365 : Day 29 : Rough Rock #365photos

Day 29 : This is the wonderfully named Rough Rock otherwise known as the First Grit.  This beautifully dark red, coarse-grained feldspathic gritstone doesn't make a particularly good building stone as it is often poorly cemented.  Its main use in Staffordshire is actually for glass sand and it is extensively quarried near Moneystone.  This sample is from Wetley Rocks.

Photographic note : I think this one of my better sandstone macros.  I think there are three reasons, first I'm starting to get the hang of taking them them, second it is a brighter day and the light is better in my office, and third the rock is soft enough to scrape a flattish surface so I can get more in focus.
