Rock 365 : Day 26 : Chatsworth Grit #365photos

Day 26 : A second Staffordshire building stone. This is the Chatsworth
Grit from Mow Cop, Staffordshire. This was extensively quarried at
Mow Cop for local building stone including that of Mow Cop ‘castle’.
The quarries were subject to numerous disputes between the Sneyd
family of Keele Hall who owned the Staffordshire side of the ridge and
the Wilbraham family of Rode Hall who owned the Cheshire side. The
‘castle’ was a summerhouse built by Ralph Wilbraham. The Chatsworth
Grit here is quite bleached compared to its more orange colour
elsewhere in Staffordshire probably due to the passage of fluids along
neighbouring Red Rock Fault. The gritstone is fairly coarse and
arkosic with kaolinised feldspar.
