Rock 365 : Day 23 : Volcaniclastic Sediments #365photos
Day 23 : Some beautiful sedimentary structures in these volcaniclastic sediments from the Lake District. This sample is from near the Rydal Cave on the south side of Rydal Water between Grasmere and Ambleside. The cave was actually a 'slate' mine but as we can see here the rocks are not slates but fine grained sandstones with a strong cleavage which show these wonderful sedimentary structures when the rock is split. The rock is the Caradocian age Seathwaite Fell Sandstone Formation, part of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group.
